Notable Events and Chronology for Career

Biography

One of the few players in MLB history to be born in France, he played 7 seasons with the Phiadelphia Phillies (1983-1989). Not much of a hitter, Jeltz was a good defensive shortstop. His career highlight was in 1989 when he hit 2 of his 5 career home runs in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates (the infamous game in which Pirates broadcaster Jim Rooker stated he’d walk home to Pittsburgh if the Phillies came back from a 10-0 deficit after the 1st inning – the Phils ended up winning the game, 15-11 (at Veterans Stadium), and Rooker eventually made the 300 mile walk, benefiting charity). The 2 home runs in the game for Jeltz were from each side of the plate, the first time in franchise history that a player had accomplished this.

Steve was actually adept at getting on base: his career .308 OBP is 98 points higher than his career .210 BA.
