Cardinal batterymates and brothers Mort and Walker Cooper decide to play Game 2 of the World Series on the day their dad, Robert, dies at his home in Independence. After limiting the Yankees to six hits and winning the game, 4-3, Mort heads to Missouri while his younger brother, Walker, who has a 1-for-3 day behind the plate with an eighth-inning single, will stay with the club until the Fall Classic is over.
1943 – MLB statistics show the Chicago White Sox Luke Appling leading American League hitters with a .328 batting average, the lowest since Ty Cobb hit .324 to lead in 1908. Conversely, of course, the pitchers’ marks are topped by Spud Chandler’s 1.64 ERA, the best since 1919. Chandler also has the best winning percentage at .833, on a 20-4 won-lost mark. White Sox outfielder Wally Moses stole 56 bases after stealing only three two years before. The veteran Mel Ott hits only .234 for his New York Giants, but he still has 18 home runs, all at the Polo Grounds.
Vern Stephens becomes the first player to hit two extra-inning home runs in the same game. The Browns shortstop puts St. Louis ahead with a solo shot in the 11th, and after the Red Sox tie the score in the bottom of the frame he goes deep again in the 13th with the eventual winning run in the team’s 4-3 victory at Fenway Park.

For hitting, Redbirds prime with Whitey Kurowski, Walker Cooper, and Stan Musial, who in his second season hits .357 and has 220 hits, 347 total bases, 48 doubles and 20 triples.
Carl Scheib became the youngest player to appear in an American League game when he tosses two-thirds of an inning in the A’s 11-4 loss to New York, giving up two hits and an earned run in the ninth inning of the Shibe Park contest. The 16 year-old good-hitting right-hander will post a 45-65 win-loss record, along with a .250 batting average during his 11 seasons in the major leagues.
1943 – Detroit’s Rudy York hits two home runs to bring his August home run total to 17, one less than his 1937 record for home runs in a single month, which he also set in August.
