Braves hurler George Davis, a Harvard Law School student who will retire after four seasons in the major leagues with a 7-10 record, no-hits the Phillies, 7-0, giving him the distinction of being the first pitcher to throw a no-hiter at Fenway Park, the home of the American League Red Sox. Davis will appear in just four games this year, all for the Giants, before White Sox owner Charles Comiskey secures an injunction to keep him off the field. He’ll be back with the Sox next season.
Veteran SS George Davis, 1900-1901 Giants manager who played for the White Stockings in 1902 and was awarded to them as part of the peace treaty, gets the approval of National League president Harry Pulliam to play for the Giants. After Davis plays in four games, including today, for the Giants, Chicago’s owner Charles Comiskey gets an injunction preventing Davis from playing. On July 20th the NL directors vote that Davis cannot play for any team except the White Stockings. Davis sits out the rest of the season but will rejoin Chicago in 1904 and finish a 20-year career with them in 1909.

He hits 3 batters, walks 2, and gives up 6 runs in a 13-7 loss, charged to Doheny. The New York Times says, “Matty has lots of speed and gives promise of making his way.” Doheny also plunks a batter, while Brooklyn’s Joe McGinnity hits two for a combined 6 hit batsmen in the game, a record, since tied.
