2007 – The Mitchell Report on steroids in baseball is released, naming those players whom there was either evidence or testimony of using performance enhancing drugs. A handful of former Astros, including Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte are named. Newly-acquired shortstop Miguel Tejada also makes the list. Clemens, through an attorney, denies using steroids.

In his first public appearance since allegations of usage of performance-enhancing drugs surfaced, New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi apologizes to his teammates, Yankees fans and to baseball fans everywhere for letting them down last season. The All-Star first baseman, however, never uses the word steroids as he “accepts full responsibility for the controversy.”

The Athletics send OF Jeremy Giambi to the Phillies in exchange for IF/OF John Mabry. The trade, viewed as one-sided for the Phils, especially by the statistically-oriented community, will be a good one for Oakland. Giambi will homer in his first two Phillie at bats on the 25th, and be the first player in major league history to hit eight homers in each league before the All-Star break. He’ll finish the year with 20. That, plus Jason Giambi’s 41, will give the Giambi boys the record for homers by brothers in the same season, topping the 59 hit in 1937 by Joe DiMaggio (46) and Vince DiMaggio (13). However, Mabry will slug .523 in 89 games and help Oakland to a division title.

The Yankees sign free agent 1B Jason Giambi to a seven-year deal worth $120 million. The 2000 MVP and this year’s runner-up drove in 120 runs, hit 38 home runs, and had a .342 batting average for the wild card Oakland A’s this season. In another move, New York acquires OF John Vander Wal from San Francisco in exchange for P Jay Witasick.

For the third and final time, Jason and Jeremy Giambi homer in the same game when both brothers go deep off Sterling Hitchcock in Oakland’s 8-6 victory over New York at Network Associates Coliseum. The A’s teammates first accomplished the feat last season and again in June.

Hank Aaron becomes the oldest major leaguer (42 years, 5 months, 7 days) to hit a walk-off homer when he goes deep in the bottom of the tenth inning off Steve Foucault in the Brewers’ 5-4 victory over Texas at County Stadium. The ‘Hammer’ will hold the elderly distinction until Cleveland’s Jason Giambi, who will be a month and 15 days older than Henry, at the time, accomplishes the feat with a pinch-hit game-winning round-tripper in 2013.
