The 2017 class of the Hall of Fame is inducted in Cooperstown, NY. Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez are the three players honored, while executives Bud Selig and John Schuerholz were voted in by the Veterans Committee. The presence of a large number of fans wearing the gear of the defunct Montréal Expos in honor of Raines cannot be missed among the crowd of 27,000 present for the ceremonies.
2017 – The Baseball Writers Association of America elects three players to the Hall of Fame: former Houston Astros 1B Jeff Bagwell receives 86.2% of the vote to make it on his seventh try, while lead-off man Tim Raines is just behind him with 86% in his 10th and final year of eligibility. C Ivan Rodriguez also makes it, on his first attempt, clearing the 75% threshold by four votes. Falling just short are RP Trevor Hoffman and OF Vladimir Guerrero, who miss by 5 and 15 votes, respectively.
2017 – First baseman Jeff Bagwell is voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with 86.2% of the vote, along with catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who played briefly with the Astros, and outfielder Tim Raines. It was Bagwell’s seventh year on the ballot.
Houston’s Brandon Barnes, who goes 5-for-5, scores three times and drives in two runs in the Astros’ 10-7 loss to Seattle at Minute Maid Park, and collects the eighth cycle in franchise history. The Astros center fielder joins Cesar Cedeno (1972, 1976), Bob Watson (1977), Andujar Cedeno (1992), Jeff Bagwell (2001), Craig Biggio (2002), and Luke Scott (2006) when his eighth-inning double completes the historic accomplishment.
Jeff Bagwell draws 41.7% of the vote in his first year on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot, which sets off a debate about Bagwell’s credentials and suspicions of steroid use. Bagwell insists he’s never used them and no accuser has comes forward with any proof yet that doesn’t seem to be good enough for some writers who declare their opposition.

Bagwell insists he’ll play despite an arthritic right shoulder that required surgery the previous year. He fields grounders and hits in light drills the first day and talks briefly with owner Drayton McLane.
In the first matchup between 300-game winners in almost 18 years, Greg Maddux outduels Roger Clemens in the Chicago Cubs’ 3 – 2 victory over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. The last such showdown occurred in 1987 when Don Sutton of the California Angels defeated Steve Carlton of the Minnesota Twins. Maddux earns his first win of season and 306th of his career, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings.
