It’s an eventful afternoon at New Yankee Stadium as the Yankees defeat the Tigers, 5 – 4. First, Alex Rodriguez hits his first homer of the year off Justin Verlander in the 2nd and in the process passes Stan Musial for 5th place on the all-time RBI list with 1,951. Then, leading off the 4th, Alfonso Soriano also goes deep off Verlander, for the 2,000th hit of his career. The Yankees hand a 4 – 2 lead to Mariano Rivera in the top of the 9th, but for the third straight time, Mariano blows the opportunity by allowing solo homers to Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. However, Brett Gardner homers in turn, off José Veras with two outs in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.

After a moving ceremony celebrating the history of the 85 year-old ballpark, New York beat the Orioles in the last game ever played at Yankee Stadium, 7-3. Julia Ruth Stevens, the Babe’s daughter, throws out the ceremonial first pitch, and at the end of game, team captain Derek Jeter, standing in front of the mound, surrounded by his teammates, bids farewell to ‘House Ruth Built’ in an address in front of the 54,610 fans who attended the Bronx finale.

Colón receives 17 of 28 first-place votes cast and finishes with 118 points. Closer Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees finishes second with 8 first-place votes and 68 points, while Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins, who was the 2004 winner, is third with 3 first-place votes and 51 points.

Following the 2010 season, a panel of experts at the MLB Network will vote this game the 12th greatest game of the past fifty years.
