The 1973 Congressional Hearings on Steroids in Baseball are the real black eye

Something to consider when commenting on the dirty, dirty cheaters on this year’s Hall of Fame ballot: steroids were not invented in an evil lab underneath Oakland Coliseum in 1988 by Dr. Jose Canseco. They did not solely cheapen a record book that was pristine until the home run race of 1998. In…

Fenway Celebrates its 100th Birthday – Yankees Spoil Party

The Red Sox celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park by inviting 200 former players and coaches, including the likes of team icons Johnny Pesky, Luis Tiant, Carl Yastrzemski, Bill Buckner, and Pedro Martinez joining the celebration, to come on the field for pre-game celebrations. Caroline Kennedy, the great-granddaughter of Boston’s former mayor known as Honey Fitz, who threw out the first pitch on opening day in 1912, tosses one of the three ceremonial first pitches. However, the Yankees spoil the party by hitting five homers, including two by Eric Chavez, on their way to a 6 – 2 win. For Ivan Nova, it is his 15th consecutive victory, dating back to last season. The victory moves the right-hander ahead of Whitey Ford (1961) and Steve Sundra (1938-39), and one shy of the franchise record of 16 consecutive wins, established last season by Roger Clemens.

The trial of Roger Clemens on accusations of perjury in his testimony to Congress in February 2008, opens today in Washington, DC with jury selection. Among the witnesses which prosecutors are planning to call on are Commissioner Bud Selig, former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, former teammates Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada and slugger Sammy Sosa. Clemens’ attorneys also plan to call on former managers and teammates – albeit different ones – to testify on behalf of the former pitcher.

Roger Clemens and his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee testify

In a much anticipated congressional hearing, Roger Clemens and his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee, testify for four and a half hours concerning the allegations of the Rocket’s use of performance-enhancing drugs. Although no definitive conclusions are reached, Republicans appear to believe the seven-time Cy Young Award winner while Democrats seem to favor his chief accuser’s account of events.
