2000 – Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Kazuhiro Sasaki, who posted a 2-5 record with a 3.16 ERA and 37 saves, becomes the second-oldest major leaguer to win the Rookie of the Year Award as the 32-year old captures the American League honor. Sam Jethroe, who played in the Negro Leagues before joining the Boston Braves, was 33 days older than Sasaki when he won the National League award in 1950.

1953 – The Pittsburgh Pirates send flashy 2B Danny O’Connell to the Milwaukee Braves for 3B Sid Gordon, OF Sam Jethroe, P Max Surkont, and four minor league pitchers. Pittsburgh also get $100,000 from the Braves. This is the only six-for-one trade in major league history and will be surpassed only by the seven-for-one deal that will send Vida Blue from the Oakland A’s to the SF Giants in 1978.

The BBWAA name Sam Jethroe of the Boston Braves as the National League Rookie of the Year. At 31 years, 2 months, 18 days of age, Jethroe becomes the oldest rookie to win the award. He has been one of the best Negro Leagues players of all time.
The Braves’ Johnny Sain fails in his attempt to win his 20th game, but hits his first major-league home run, off Larry Jansen, in a 4 – 3 loss to the visiting Giants. With two outs in the 10th, Sam Jethroe loses Don Mueller’s fly ball in the sun and Mueller legs out a triple. Hank Thompson’s single wins it for Jansen. A Saturday crowd of 5,535 watch the Braves drop out of 2nd place, while the Giants move to within three games of the Phils.
Sam Jethroe, former Cleveland Buckeyes star of the Negro American League, becomes the first black player for the Braves. The 33 year-old highly-touted prospect, who will lead the majors with 35 stolen bases, will be named the National League’s Rookie of the Year.
