The Hall of Fame inducts one of the largest classes in its history before a crowd of more than 50,000 in Cooperstown, NY. Honored are Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones, Jack Morris, Jim Thome and Alan Trammell, four of them having been elected by the BBWAA and Morris and Trammell by the Veterans Committee.

The Padres retire uniform number 51 worn by reliever Trevor Hoffman during his stellar career before their game with the Florida Marlins, then Will Venable caps off the day with a game-winning single off Edward Mujicaagainst a five-man infield for a 4 – 3 win. Hoffman’s successor as the Padres’ closer, Heath Bell, gives up a homer to Mike Cameron with two outs in the top of the 9th for a blown save, but earns the win instead.

Trevor Hoffman, who staked his claim as the all-time saves leader in the majors thanks to an outstanding change-up, announces his retirement after 18 seasons. He recorded his 600th save with the Brewers last season, and retires with 601, but had a tough year overall and found little interest in his services for next season. He will not hold the saves record for long, however, as Mariano Rivera has 559 and will pass him before the end of the coming season.

The all-time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman of the Milwaukee Brewers, continues to struggle this year. He blows a save for the second consecutive day in a 6 – 5, 14-inning loss to the Pirates by giving up a game-tying 9th-inning home run to Ryan Doumit, one day after giving up a grand slam to Doumit. Hoffman has already blown 4 save opportunities this year, as many as in all of 2009, and has an ERA of 13.00 with 6 homers allowed.

2009 – Trevor Hoffman adds another save to his all-time leading total when he picks up number 555 in pitching a scoreless 9th inning in Milwaukee’s 6 – 5 win over Pittsburgh. It is the Brewers’ 14th straight win over Pittsburgh, dating back to 2007. This is Hoffman’s first save for the Brewers; he picked up two as a rookie for the Florida Marlins in 1993, and the 552 others came with the San Diego Padres.

Recording his 321st save for the San Diego Padres, Trevor Hoffman sets a new major league record for the most saves for one team, surpassing the mark set by Dennis Eckersley with the Oakland Athletics. The long-time San Diego closer, now eighth on the all-time list, was traded as a rookie by the Florida Marlins as part of the Gary Sheffield deal in 1993.
