On January 31, 1959, former major league star Joe Cronin succeeds Will Harridge as president of the American League. A Hall of Fame shortstop who played for Pittsburgh, Washington, and Boston, Cronin batted .301 over a 20-year playing career. American League President Will Harridge announces his retirement.
1950 – Major League Presidents Ford Frick (American League) and Will Harridge (National League) vote to deposit $950,000 received for World Series TV and radio rights into the player’s pension fund.
1938 – Major league teams adopt several resolutions. The National League allows the Cincinnati Reds to play their season opener one day before other teams, as a way of honoring the 100th anniversary of baseball and of the 1869 Red Stockings being the first professional team. In other news, Will Harridge is re-elected as American League president and given a 10-year term. The AL permits the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Athletics to play night games. Finally, the major leagues agree on a standard ball but disagree on increasing rosters from 23 to 25 players. Judge Landis will eventually decide on 25.
At the major leagues’ annual meeting, the owners vote Judge Landis another seven-year contract as commissioner. Will Harridge gets a new five-year pact as American League president.
Lefty Grove wins his 24th game, replacing starter Tim McKeithan after four innings and the A’s leading, 8 – 3. The final score is 11 – 4, with General Crowder taking the loss. But Grove’s win is tainted. The Athletics “contrived” to give Grove the sure win, so that he could finish the season with more wins than National League star Carl Hubbell, who will finish with 23. American League President Will Harridge will reverse the official scorer’s decision next week and give the win to McKeithan, but the league eventually returns the win to Grove.
