On September 19, 1925 — In the second game of a twin bill, the White Sox take a 15 – 0 lead against Washington after five innings, but Chicago Pitcher Ted Lyons known as “Sunday Ted” will have to pitch to 21 different batters as Senators manager Bucky Harris juggles his lineup and sends in seven pinch-hitters. With a no-hitter going, Lyons continues to bear down. Finally, with two out in the 9th, Washington’s Bobby Veach gets a clean single to right to break the no-hitter. the Post recorded, “had the home hitters breaking their backs in unavailing efforts to solve his delivery.”

The final is 17 – 0 and the Sox banged out 25 hits for Lyons while scoring seven runs in the second inning and eight in the fifth and Tom Zachary taking the loss. Washington outfielder Sam Rice’s streak of nine hits in a row is stopped, but he will end the season with 182 singles, an American League record until 1980. Washington takes the opener, 3 – 2, behind Dutch Ruether.

After the game, an apologetic Veach visited Lyons in the visitor’s clubhouse. “I knew Ted would want to earn a no-hit game if he did it at all, so I did my best, but believe me,” Veach said, “I’m mighty sorry things turned out that way.”
