The Cardinals trade for shortstop Dick Groat the new infielder will become a central cog in the team’s World championship in 1964

On November 19, 1962 — The St. Louis Cardinals trade pitcher Don Cardwell and infielder Julio Gotay to the Pittsburgh Pirates for shortstop Dick Groat and pitcher Diomedes Olivo. Groat, the National League MVP in 1960, will be an All-Star for the next two seasons and will become a force in the Cardinals World Championship in 1964.
