On June 27, 1962 The Cards receive a pair of shutouts from Larry Jackson and Ray Sadecki to sweep the Cubs, 4 – 0 and 8 – 0. Jackson yields four hits in the first game and Sadecki allows five hits in the nitecap. Sadecki hits a 9th-inning home run and Julian Javier and Curt Flood hit back-to-back homers off Bob Anderson.
Kansas City’s Kevin Appier makes his first start of the season, stopping the Mariners, 8 – 5. It is exactly one year since Appier’s last start, at Anaheim. Since then he’s had two operations and been hospitalized with colon inflammation. His two strikeouts today put him in a tie for the career club record.

The Yankees claim Jose Canseco off waivers from the Devil Rays. The 35 year-old slugger will appear in just 37 games for the Bronx Bombers, primarily as a designated hitter, hitting .247 in 111 at bats.

1909 – Still pitching doubleheaders, Joe McGinnity wins a pair for Newark over Buffalo in the Eastern League.

Carlos Gonzalez completes the cycle by crashing a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th as the Rockies defeat the Cubs, 6 – 5. Gonzalez’s blast off Sean Marshall comes after Chicago’s Derrek Lee hits a game-tying three-run homer off Rafael Betancourt in the 8th inning. Huston Street is the winner.
