On October 10, 1948 — The largest crowd ever to attend a World Series game, 86,288 fans, jam into Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium to witness a showdown between two future Hall of Famers. Braves’ southpaw Warren Spahn beats Bob Feller and the Indians in Game 5 of the Fall Classic, 11-5.
The crowd of 86,288 and one automobile leave dejected after their Cleveland Indians failed to clinch their first World Series title in 28 years.
The Indians went into Game Five with high hopes and a three games to one series lead, but the Boston Braves had other ideas and delayed Cleveland’s celebration by taking the game 11-5 and rocking the Tribe’s ace Bob Feller for two home runs, one by Bob Elliot, a three-run bomb in the first inning and another by Bill Salkeld, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Despite the setback the Indians would win the sixth game in Boston at Braves Field by a 4-3 score for their first title since 1920, and would be their last title to this present day.
Cleveland’s other ace Bob Lemon was the star of the series winning both games he started, including the clincher, and finished with a 1.65 ERA. Feller, arguably the top pitcher in baseball at the time, struggled in the series going 0-2 with a 5.02 ERA.
