On August 6, 1999 — The Padres defeat the Expos, 12 – 10, as San Diego OF Tony Gwynn records the 3000th hit of his big league career. Gwynn goes 4 for 5 to lead the Padres to victory. Quilvio Veras ties a Pads record by scoring four runs.
Francisco Rodriguez, surpassing John Smoltz’s effort for the 2003 Braves by ten games, becomes the quickest reliever ever to reach 40 saves. The Angels closer strikes out the side in the ninth of a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Red Sox, completing a sweep of the reigning World Series champions.

The Astros’ Jeff Bagwell suffers a broken hand when his is hit by a pitch in the 4th from Brian Williams in the Astros’ 7 – 1 win over the Padres. It is the same bone that he broke last year when he was hit by a pitch from Andy Benes on August 10th, two days before the strike.
July 30, 1995
A two-run homer by Justin Turner off Jeremy Jeffress in the 8th completes a comeback from a 3 – 0 deficit and gived the Dodgers a 4 – 3 win over the Brewers in Game 2 of the NLCS. The Dodgers overcome solo homers by Orlando Arcia and Travis Shaw, and a steal of a potential two-run shot by CF Lorenzo Cain, who snatches David Freese’s hit over the outfield fence in the 1st.

Babe Ruth makes his first start of his professional career when he defeats the world champion Philadelphia Athletics, 6-2, in an exhibition game played in Wilmington, N.C. The 19 year-old Red Sox rookie left-hander had faced 29 batters in relief, allowing just six hits to earn a spot in manager Jack Dunn’s rotation.
