On February 7 2011 — The Yaquis de Obregón win the Caribbean Series for the first time in their history after beating Anzoátegui, 3 – 2, to finish with a 4 and 2 record. Series MVP Jorge Vazquez’s two-run home run off Seth Etherton is the big blow for the Mexicans. P Alberto Castillo gets off to a rough start, giving up 2 runs in 4 innings, but the four relievers who succeed him slam the door shut, with Luis Ayala getting the save. In the second game, Raul Valdes pitches 7 2/3 scoreless innings to end the Dominicans’ hopes in the tournament.
The BBWAA selects Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzuto (.324, 7, 66) as the American League MVP. The ‘Scooter’, who receives 16 of 23 first-place votes, easily outpoints runner-up Boston’s Billy Goodman, the first player without a regular position to receive consideration for the prestigious award.
