1905 – Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League beats visiting Portland, 3 – 2, in 11 innings. Bill Tozer (22-15) of Los Angeles ends his PCL record 48 consecutive shutout inning streak when Portland scores two unearned runs in the 3rd inning.

Oakland owner Charlie Finley uses the ‘Yankee Clipper’ to be a part-time hitting coach and public relations advocate for the club, a job the former superstar will quickly become unhappy with, leaving the organization after just two years in the position.

St. Louis Cardinals win their third straight home game, 4 - 2, against the Minnesota Twins, and take a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

1991 – The first-ever World Series game played in Atlanta goes to the Braves. A two-out single by Mark Lemke in the 12th inning gives the Braves a 5 – 4 win in Game 3 of the Series. David Justice scores the winning run. Lemke had made a potentially crucial error in the top half of the inning. The contest is the longest night game in Series history at four hours and four minutes, and the second longest by innings. The Minnesota Twins use a World Series-record 23 players in the game.

1992 – In the World Series, Atlanta cuts the Blue Jays’ lead to 3-2 with a 7 – 2 victory in Game 5. A grand slam by Lonnie Smith in the 5th inning and a solid outing by winning pitcher John Smoltz ensure that the Series will return to Atlanta.

1994 – Bob Hamelin of the Kansas City Royals easily outpaces Manny Ramirez to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Hamelin hit .282 with 24 home runs in 101 games, the most he will play in his major league career.

1995 – The Atlanta Braves take a 2 – 0 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the World Series behind the pitching of Tom Glavine. His batterymate, Javy López, decides the game with a two-run home run in the 6th inning off Dennis Martinez. Atlanta leads the Series, 2-0.

1996 – In the World Series, New York Yankees pitcher David Cone holds the Braves and Bernie Williams drives in three runs in a 5 – 2 win in Game 3 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Joining Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson, Darryl Kile will become the third player to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot before the mandatory five-year waiting period. The 33-year-old St. Louis Cardinals pitcher was found dead in his Chicago hotel room on June 22nd, felled by heart disease.

Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games streak being broken by Cal Ripken, Jr. in 1995 is voted as baseball’s most memorable moment by the fans participating in a Major League Baseball and MasterCard promotion. Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, Jackie Robinson becoming the first black to play in the major leagues, Mark McGwire breaking Roger Maris’ single-season home run record and Gehrig’s farewell speech were also in the top five events selected by the fans.

The Anaheim Angels pound out 16 hits in a 10 – 4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. Pitcher Ramón Ortiz goes five innings for the victory. Rich Aurilia and Barry Bonds hit home runs for the Giants while Scott Spiezio has three RBI for Anaheim. Giants public announcer Rene Brooks-Moon becomes the first woman to announce a World Series. Her scorecard from Game 4 is being sent to the Hall of Fame.

The Spiezios become the first father-and-son combination in baseball history to have appeared in a World Series game as a player for the same franchise. Scott, the Cardinals’ current second baseman, and his father, Ed, a third baseman for the 1967 club, both played for in the Fall Classic for winning Redbird teams.

Tony La Russa agrees to a two-year contract to continue as the Cardinals manager. During his 12-year tenure in St. Louis, the 63 year-old skipper has compiled a 1,055-887 (.543) record, which includes six Central Division championships, two NL pennants, and one World Series Championship.

Washington State native Mel Stottlemyre returns to the big leagues as the pitching coach of the Seattle Mariners, accepting a one-year contract to join skipper John McLaren’s staff. The former pitching coach for the Yankees and Mets, who is receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, left the Bronx after the 2005 season, tiring of the criticism from owner George Steinbrenner.

Dave Trembley, who became the Orioles’ interim manager in June, has his contract extended through the 2008 season, with a club option for 2009. Since his horrific first game as skipper, losing to the Rangers 30-3, the team has a winning record and has not lost more than three in a row.

Jack Zduriencik, the first non-GM to be selected as Baseball America Executive of the Year, is named as the Mariners general manager, the eighth in franchise history. The former Brewers vice president and special assistant for player personnel is given credit for the marked improvement in Milwaukee due to his scouting savvy.

The Angels stave off elimination in Game 5 of the ALCS by beating the Yankees, 7 – 6. Los Angeles overcomes a six-run Yankee inning in the 7th by coming back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Brian Fuentes ends the tense contest by getting Nick Swisher to fly out with the bases loaded in the 9th.

In the Cardinals’ 16-7 rout of the Rangers in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, Albert Pujols hits three homers, drives in six runs, and collects five hits, all equaling World Series records. ‘Prince Albert’, who also set a Series mark with 14 total bases, connects on fastballs from three different Texas pitchers, joining Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson for the most round-trippers in a World Series game.

2012 – The Giants easily win Game 7 of the NLCS, 9 – 0 over the Cardinals. For the Giants, it is their sixth straight win facing elimination this postseason, as they complete a comeback from a 3-1 series deficit, after previously winning the NLDS after trailing, 2-0. Series MVP Marco Scutaro has three hits to lead the Giants offense, which chases Kyle Lohse before he can retire anyone in the 3rd inning. Matt Cain is the winner with 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

2013 – The Reds name pitching coach Bryan Price to succeed Dusty Baker as the team’s manager.

Tim Lincecum agrees to a two-year $35 million deal to stay with the Giants. The 29 year-old fan favorite, a two-time Cy Young winner who pitched a no-hitter this year, has a 4.76 ERA over his last two seasons with San Francisco.

Major League Baseball hands out its newly-named reliever awards for the first time. In the National League, Craig Kimbrel of the Braves is the winner of the initial Trevor Hoffman Award, while in the American league, Greg Holland of the Royals wins the Mariano Rivera Award.

The Royals even the World Series with a 7 – 2 win over the Giants in Game 2. The Royals break a 2 – 2 tie in the 6th by scoring 5 runs as the Giants use five pitchers in a vain attempt to stop the bleeding. Billy Butler puts the Royals ahead with a run-scoring single, but the big blows are a two-run double by Salvador Perez followed by a two-run homer by Omar Infante, both against rookie Hunter Strickland.

The Dodgers part ways with manager Don Mattingly after five seasons. They once again failed to advance past the Division Series in spite of a payroll of $300 million.

A magnificent performance by pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Aroldis Chapman, who face the minimum 27 batters over 9 scoreless innings, drives the Cubs into the World Series for the first time since 1945 thanks to a 5 – 0 win over the Dodgers in Game 6 of the 2016 NLCS. Chicago scores twice against Clayton Kershaw in the bottom of the 1st, and Willson Contreras and Anthony Rizzo also homer off the ace lefty who leaves after five innings. The NLCS MVP Award is shared by Jon Lester and Javier Baez.

The Red Sox announce that they have hired Astros bench coach Alex Cora to be their new manager. He replaces John Farrell, who was let go on October 11th after seeing the team eliminated in the Division Series for the second straight year.
