Tim Hurst fires a beer bottle back at the fans

On August 4, 1897 — In the 2nd inning of the second game of a doubleheader between theĀ PiratesĀ andĀ RedsĀ inĀ Cincinnati, OH, fans throw an empty beer bottle in the direction of umpireĀ Tim Hurst. hurst has made a call favoring the Pirates.

Hurst picks it up and throws it right back in the crowd. He is arrested and fined $300 dollars on a charge of assault and battery when the bottle hits a spectator, striking Cincinnati fireman John Cartuyvelles above the eye. Cartuyvelles suffered a cut which required four stitches.

Hurst was suspended by the National League after the incident. He was ultimately fired in 1909 while umpiring in the American League for spitting at Philadelphia’s Eddie Collins. Hurst also worked as a boxing referee.
