Umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting in the face of  Eddie Collins

On August 4, 1909 –A riot .was barely averted at the close of the doubleheader between the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Stockings here yesterday afternoon. It was asserted that Umpire Tim Hurst spat in Eddie Collins’ face in the eighth inning of the second game when the Quaker player objected to ‘ a ruling whereby the latter was declared out on a close play at second “base. It was only the prompt action of Manager Connie Mack and the police that held the crowd In check after the game. Scarcely had the last out been made when a crowd of fans rushed at Hurst, but the police and local players escorted Hurst to his dressing room. This incident will eventually lead to Hurst’s banishment from baseball in two weeks.
