William Shea announces the formation of the Continental League

On July 27, 1959, New York lawyer William Shea announces the formation of the Continental League has definite franchises planned for New York City, Houston, Toronto, Denver, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, with interest in 11 other cities. It envisions beginning play in 1961. New York City says it will build a stadium at the Flushing Meadow Park site. The league will never play a game but will strike a deal with the major leagues, enabling New York and Houston to join as expansion teams and Minneapolis as a relocated franchise.
