On September 11, 2009 — With an opposite-field single in the third inning of a 10-4 loss to Baltimore on a rainy New York night, Derek Jeter becomes the all-time team leader in hits for the historic franchise. The safety gives the Yankees captain 2,722 hits, one more than legendary Lou Gehrig, another 35 year-old team captain, who had held the record for more than 70 years.
