On July 3, 1950 With rookie Joe Collins not hitting and Tommy Henrich still injured, Casey Stengel asks Joe DiMaggio to play 1B in an experiment. In the 7 – 2 loss he handles 13 chances cleanly but is clearly not happy with the move. After this one-game experiment, Joe returns to the outfield.
Denny McLain earns his 20th victory of the season when he blanks Baltimore at Memorial Stadium, 9-0. The Tiger right-hander is the third pitcher in history to reach the milestone this quickly, with only Rube Marquard (Giants, July 19, 1912) and Lefty Grove (A’s, July 25, 1931) accomplishing the feat earlier in a season.

2000 – Staying with his hometown New York Mets, John Franco signs a nearly $11 million three-year pact as a set-up man, foregoing an opportunity with the Philadelphia Phillies to pick up the 59 saves he needs to break Lee Smith’s career saves record of 478.

1903 – Ed Delahanty, one of five major league brothers, and the greatest natural hitter of his time, rejoins the Washington Nationals in accordance with the baseball peace terms. A three-year contract with the New York Giants at $8,000 a season, signed during the winter, is canceled. The Nationals reimburse the Giants for the $3,000 advanced to Delahanty.
