Yogi Berra wins his first of three MVP awards
On November 8, 1951 — In one of the closest votes in the history of the award, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America names Yankees catcher Yogi Berra (.294, 27, 88) as the American League’s Most Valuable Player. The Yankees catcher, edges out the Browns’ 20-game winner Ned Garver, who was told he had won the award by a representative from the BBWAA before a recount gave the Bronx Bomber backstop a slight edge.
Over seven years 1950 – 1957, Berra will win 3 MVP Awards and finish no lower than 4th in any of these seasons and from 1947 – 1961, Berra appeared in every MVP balloting.
