Philip de Catesby Ball, ice-manufacturing tycoon and principal stockholder of the Feds’ St. Louis Terriers, pays a reported $525,000 for the Browns and replaces manager Branch Rickey with his own Fielder Jones.

1918 – Ban Johnson casts the deciding vote in a National Commission decision awarding the disputed services of P Jack Quinn to the Yankees for 1919 over the claim of the White Sox, for whom Quinn was 5-1 this year.

August 26, 1918

Chase Headley, obtained by the Yankees less than 12 hours ago, hits a single in the 14th inning, giving the Bombers a 2-1 walk-off victory over Texas in the Bronx. New York acquired their new third baseman earlier in the day when they traded minor league pitching prospect Rafael De Paula and infielder Yangervis Solarte to the Padres, with the team also receiving $1 million from San Diego to pay part of the $4 million still owed to the infielder this season.

July 22, 2014

The Red Sox finally record their first win of the season after starting 0-6, defeating their arch-rivals the New York Yankees, 9 – 6, in their home opener. Dustin Pedroia hits a homer in his first at-bat with his team down 2 – 0 and finishes the day with 3 hits and as many RBI to lead the Boston attack. John Lackey is the winner in spite of giving up 6 runs over 5 innings.
