On July 22, 1922 — 1922 – The Cardinals go into first place by half a game by beating Boston while the Reds are downing the Giants. It is the first time both St. Louis teams are ever on top together. St. Louis overcomes an 8 – 3 deficit in the 8th, to win, 9 – 8. The game is halted to clear hundred of straw hats off the field. For the Cards, it is their 23rd win in 29 games, but from here on out they will slide.
