The Giants send pitchers Fred Toney and Larry Benton to the Braves with $100,000 and bring back righthander Hugh McQuillan. Toney refuses to report and stays in New York. When Benton develops into a consistent pitcher, the Giants will buy him back.
The Pirates again top the Giants, 7 – 0, as Max Carey bangs another two home runs. The Pirates will win two more to sweep the four-game series with the Giants.
The Browns move to a 1 1/2 game lead, beating the Red Sox, 4 – 1, as the White Sox beat New York. Ken Williams hits his 26th homer, one of three Brownie bombs.
The Browns host the Red Sox and beat them, 4 – 1, behind Urban Shocker. However, both George Sisler and C Hank Severeid are injured, the latter with a split finger on a foul tip. Sisler is spiked in the 4th.
At the Polo Grounds, the under-performing Pirates crack five homers and trounce the league-leading Giants, 8 – 3. Max Carey hits two and starter Wilbur Cooper another.
The Yanks move back into first place when Sad Sam Jones beats Ray Kolp, 7 – 3. Kolp lasts just two innings before Bill Bayne takes over for the final seven and allows two runs. Ken Williams hits his 23rd homer but Whitey Witt counters with a three-run home run.
The American League announces plans to erect a $100,000 monument to baseball in East Potomac Park, Washington. It never gets built.
Rogers Hornsby ties the National League single-season home run record with his 27th, matching the 38-year-old mark set by Ed Williamson of the Chicago White Stockings in 1884. Hornsby’s 8th-inning solo shot off the Giants’ Bill Ryan carries into the Polo Grounds’ left field bleachers and pulls the Cards to within 2 runs of their New York hosts. But hospitality goes only so far; New York answers right back with two and closes out St. Louis, 8 – 4.
On July 27, 1922, future Hall of Fame first baseman George Sisler starts his then AL-record 41-game hitting streak. Sisler bats .420 that season, with a record 257 hits.
1922 – Elam Vangilder gives up a home run to Wally Pipp in the 4th but leads, 2 – 1 going in to the 8th inning. The Yankees jump on the Browns starter and on reliever Ray Kolp for four runs before the Browns tie the game with three in the 9th. Dave Danforth comes on Fred Hofmann on a pitch “that sailed a foot.” When umpire Brick Owens examines the ball, he rules it was doctored, earning Danforth an automatic ten-day suspension. Reliever Rasty Wright comes on and serves up a game-winning home run to Wally Schang. The Yanks win, 6 – 5.
