In the second of two at Cubs Park, the Cards whip the Cubs, 5 – 3, in a game stopped after five innings. The big blow for the Birds is a 3-run homer in the 1st inning by journeyman infielder Del Gainer off Cubs lefty Percy Jones. When Jones is lifted, so is Gainer, who closes out his career with the home run. The Cards also take the opener, 9 – 8.
1923 – On Zack Wheat day in Brooklyn, the Phils’ Cy Williams ties the score in the 7th with his 39th homer and seals the win in the 12th with his 40th. The Phils win 6 – 4. Wheat has two hits and receives an automobile.
