On October 19, 1923 – A confirmation of the announcement made in Chicago tonight by Ban Johnson, president of the American League, that no more boxing matches would be permitted in baseball parks of the organization he heads was given tonight by officials of the New York American League club.

Their new Yankee Stadium, the biggest arena in baseball, will not be used again either for boxing matches or for “Wild West”‘ rodeos, such – as were held there last summer, the first season it has been available. Two sets of boxing matches were staged there, the first, the milk fund card, on which Jess Willard. Floyd Johnson. Luis Firpo and Jack McAuliffe performed, and the second when Benny Leonard successfully defended his lightweight title against Lew Tendler.

Similar action is not contemplated by the National League, so far as could be learned here. President John A. Heydler said the subject had not been discussed as fat as he knew among club owners of the organization, and he had no comment to make. Mr. Heydler, however, several times in the past has been outspoken against mixing baseball with boxing. The Polo Grounds, home of the New York National League club, has been used more for boxing than has the Yankee Stadium. Tex Rickard. boxing promoter is the moving spirit behind an organization that conducts bouts at the latter park. Charles S. Stoneham, president of the Giants, could not be reached tonight, but John J. McGraw, manager and vice President, said he knew of no change in policy. ‘Ban Johnson.” said Mr. McGraw. “has nothing else to do but manage the American League, but if he were managing the National League, he wouldn’t order our club to close its park to boxing. That is the business of the club owner and Mr. Stoneham handles that end of our club’s affairs.”
