Lefty O’Doul’s All-Stars lose 3 – 1 to a Pacific League All-Star team for the second time in history

On November 13, 1951 — History was written in Japanese baseball today when Lefty O’Doul’s visiting American All-Stars went down to their first defeat in 14 games of their current goodwill tour, 3-1.

The setback at the hands of the Pacific Professional League All-Stars before a capacity crowd of 25,000 fans was the first administered by the Japanese to a group of visiting American maior leaguers since 1931 and the only other loss was in 1922.

The present group is the third to visit Japan The Japanese used a relay of four pitchers, who held the visitors to five hits and scored their three runs off 17-year-old Ed Cereghino of the San Francisco Seals in the first three innings. Bobby Shantz of the Athletics took over the pitching in the fourth and allowed only three hits for the rest of the game, but the damage had been done. American League batting champion Ferris Fain of the Athletics singled to center after two out in the inning and scored on Hollywood star Chuck Steven’s triple to center. There were six innings left to play, but the Americans could not score again five off the visiting major leaguers, the Boston Red Sox’ Dominic DiMaggio and Mel Parnell. Fain, Yankee Billy Martin, and Pirate George Strickland, and baseball comedian Johnny Price are scheduled to go to Korea by plane Wednesday to spend two days with the GI’s on the front lines.
