1955聽– In an effort to speed up the game,聽Major League Baseball聽announces a new rule which requires a聽pitcher聽to deliver the ball within 20 seconds after taking a pitching position.
1955聽– Reliever聽Dave Smith聽is born in Richmond, CA. He would register 199 saves for Houston and was named to the Astros All-Time Team in 1999. He dies on December 17, 2008 at his California home of an apparent heart attack.
Before an聽exhibition game聽in聽San Juan, Puerto Rico,聽San Francisco Giants聽outfielder聽Willie Mays聽and teammate pitcher聽Ruben G贸mez聽get into a brawl. It starts when G贸mez slips into the聽batting cage聽ahead of Mays, and聽batting practice聽pitcher聽Milt Ralat聽then refuses to throw. The sulking G贸mez sits down on the plate, and Mays then steps to the side and directs the pitcher to throw to him there. Ralat then throws an insulting slow pitch which Mays barehands and fires back. Mays and Ralat exchange words and when Mays walks towards the mound, G贸mez, brandishing a聽bat, attempts to interfere. Mays drops him with a right. The two later apologize to each other.
1955聽– The聽Baltimore Orioles聽purchase veteran outfielder聽Hoot Evers聽from the聽Tigers.
