Senators LF Frank Howard ties a major-league record with seven strikeouts in Washington’s twin-bill split with the Red Sox.
Joe Morgan is the first Houston player with six hits in a game, but the Braves beat the Astros, 9 – 8, in 12 innings, thanks to Mike de la Hoz. De la Hoz hits a pinch homer in the 8th inning, ties the game in the 9th with a single when the Braves score three runs, and singles and scores the winning run to end the game.
7/6/1965: Rocky Colavito and Leon Wagner hit back-to-back homers to lead off the top of the fourth inning for the Indians. The homers came off Chicago’s Joe Horlen and the game was rained out.
Don Demeter of the Phillies plays his record 226th consecutive game without an error in the OF. Finishing his string in the American League, Demeter will play 266 games without an error, a major league record, but his 226 mark will subsequently be broken in the National League by Doug Dascenzo; Darren Lewis will later break the major league record.
Dave Boswell and Jim Perry are the winning pitchers as the Twins sweep a doubleheader from Boston, 6-2 and 2-0, at Metropolitan Stadium to move into first place for good. Sam Mele’s club will finish the season with a 102-60 (.630) record, finishing seven games ahead of the second-place Pale Hose.
Jim Maloney pitches the Reds to a 7 – 5 win against the Dodgers, as Cincinnati takes the National League lead.

As part of the Farmer’s Night festivities at Municipal Stadium, A’s pitcher Diego Segui rides Charlie O., the team’s mule mascot to the mound at the start of the game against the Twins. The promotion, which attracts the largest crowd in nearly two years, also features a milking contest between Kansas City first baseman Ken Harrelson and Minnesota right-hander Al Worthington as well as a greased pig competition for the fans.
