1967 – Dave Giusti twirls an eight-hit shutout over the Dodgers, 4-0. A bases-loaded double by Ron Davis is the key blow. Houston deals first baseman Eddie Mathews to Detroit, eventually receiving reliever Fred Gladding and cash (not Norm) in return.
The Tigers obtainEddie Mathews from the Astros to replace a slumping Norm Cash, who had been benched by skipper Mayo Smith. Detroit’s new first baseman will hit .231 in 36 games for pennant contenders.
After retiring the first 19 Pirates he faces, Reds’ starter Jim Maloney is forced to leave the game when he hurts his ankle stepping in a hole in the Forbes Field turf. Billy McCool finishes the contest, giving up two hits in Cincinnati’s 4-0 victory over the Pirates.
Despite a 2 – 1 loss to the Twins, the Angels are within 1 1/2 games of first place.
After whipping the Mets eight straight times, Jim Bunning finally loses to the New Yorkers. The Mets beat Philadelphia, 8 – 3.
1967 – Completing a three-game sweep of the White Sox, Jim Merritt pitches the Twins into first place with a 3 – 2 win.
