On April 27, 1968 — At Memorial Stadium, Tom Phoebus of the Baltimore Orioles pitches a 6 – 0 no-hitter against the visiting Boston Red Sox. Future Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson preserves the no-hitter with a diving play of Petrocelli’s hard liner to the hole between third and short in the eighth inning and also drives in half of the Orioles’ runs in the 6-0 victory.
Mark Bellanger also scooped up a high chopper that deflected off of Phoebus’ glove and threw to first to retire Mike Andrews. Phoebus, also leads the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate as well as scoring and driving in a run
Interesting Sidenote – Newspaper reports note that Phoebus was recovering from a sore throat and head cold and it was questionable whether he’d start.
