1970 – San Francisco’s Gaylord Perry is met by two umpires and forced to towel down before the second inning of a game at the Dome. Minus the medicine, Perry gives up five runs as the Astros build an early lead. The Giants roar back to claim a 7-5 advantage before Houston tallies three in the ninth for an 8-7 triumph. Doug Rader singles home Jim Wynn with the game-winner.
In the second inning of an eventual 7-3 win over the Orioles, the Tigers lay down a record-tying three sacrifice bunts and score a run on a sac fly. Detroit muffs Cesar Gutierrez’ and Mickey Lolich’s attempts to give themselves up, resulting in both players advancing a runner and reaching first base without making an out.
Reds SS Woody Woodward goes deep for his first and only major league homer, off Ron Reed in Atlanta. It comes in his 684th game. It is too little as the Braves top the Reds, 11 – 9. The Reds take the nitecap, 3 – 1, scoring two runs when Pat Corrales hits a long drive that glances off the glove of Hank Aaron and over the fence for a home run. Pete Rose is 5 for 5, all singles.
The Padres launch four home runs in the 9th inning against Los Angeles, but the power display comes too late and the Dodgers win, 9 – 7. Wes Parker has two doubles and a triple for L.A. For the Padres, Ivan Murrell, Ed Spiezio and Dave Campbell hit solo homers off Bill Singer, and Cito Gaston connects for a two-run homer off Jose Pena. The barrage is one short of the record.
On the first anniversary of his near-perfect game, Tom Seaver hits his first major league home run off Rich Nye of the Expos. Seaver goes on to pitch a complete game three-hitter for a 7 – 1 Mets win at Shea Stadium.
In Atlanta, Chief Nok-a-homa is joined by his cousin, Chief Round-the-Horn. The duo fails to inspire the Braves, who lose to the San Francisco Giants, 7 – 6, in 11 innings.
Dalton Jones of the Tigers loses a grand slam against the Red Sox when he passes teammate Don Wert on the basepaths. Jones pinch hits for Jim Price and belts a 2-2 pitch from Vicente Romo into the RF upper deck for an apparent grand slam. However, he passes Wert between first and second and is called out, ending up with a three-RBI single.
The Orioles again wait until the late innings to beat New York, this time striking in the 9th inning on a Frank Robinson home run and a two-out single by Don Buford. The O’s overcome an 8 – 6 deficit to win, 9 – 8.
Jim Ray Hart ties a modern major-league record with 6 RBIs in one inning (the 5th) with a three-run homer and a three-run triple; Hart is the first player in 59 years to accomplish the feat. The Giants score 11 in the frame. Hart also hits for the cycle as the Giants rout the Braves, 13 – 0. Gaylord Perry is the easy winner, posting San Francisco’s first shutout of the year. Perry will throw four more to lead the National League.
