Phillies beat Expos in last game at Connie Mack Stadium

The Phillies beat the Expos in the final game to be played at Philadelphia’s Connie Mack in ten innings, 2-1. A post-game ceremony, which includes the removal of home plate to be delivered to Veterans Stadium by helicopter, is canceled when souvenir-hunting fans swarm onto the field and destroy the ballpark.

Alex Johnson beats out Yaz by beating out a chopper

Alex Johnson becomes the first Angel to win a batting title when he edges Red Sox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski on the last day of the season. The California outfielder captures the crown by beating out a high chopper to raise his average to .3289 in the fifth inning, finishing a minuscule .003 higher than Yaz at .3286.
