On March 1, 1971 — 40-year-old Willie Mays signs a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants for $165,000 per season. He will hit 18 home runs and walk a league-leading 112 times in 1971.

Mays had been seeking a 10 year agreement for $750,000.
 
The Giants President Bill Stoneham counter offered 5 years at $75,000 before the two sides settled on the 2-year deal.
