9/20/1972: Milwaukee’s George Scott homered leading off the bottom of the 4th off Mel Stottlemyre of the Yankees with no score at the time. The game was rained out before the 4th inning was completed.
1972 – Atlanta plates 13 runs in one inning to bomb the Astros, 13-6. Felix Millan drives in five runs in the inning with a bases-loaded triple and a two-run single. Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader homer in a five-run response, but it’s not enough.
9/20/1972: In the first inning of a game in Anaheim, Kansas City pitcher Steve Busby hit a grand slam homer off Lloyd Allen. Unfortunately, first base umpire John Rice called time as the play started which nullified the blast. John Mayberry had already hit a slam in the inning so the Royals would have been added to the very short list of teams with two grand slams in one inning.
Milt Pappas, with a 6-2 complete-game victory over Montreal at Wrigley Field, wins his 200th major league game. The Cubs’ right-hander becomes the first hurler to reach the milestone without the benefit of a single 20-win season.
After scoring all of their runs in the second inning, the Braves put it on cruise control, beating the Astros, 13-6. Only 2,062 fans are on hand at Atlanta Stadium to enjoy the big inning.
