On August 28 , 1974 — Cliff Johnson slams his fifth pinch-hit homer of the year, a tenth-inning shot off Jerry Cram that sinks the Mets, 3-2 . The blast puts Johnson one shy of the big league record. Mike Cosgrove gets the win after blowing a ninth-inning save attempt.

The Tigers’ Willie Horton clouts an 11th-inning two-run home run to beat Minnesota, 5 – 3, in the opener of two. In the nightcap, Joe Coleman pitches 11 shutout innings against Minnesota before Aurelio Rodriguez’s home run gives him the 1 – 0 win. This is the third win in a row for the Tigers on 11th-inning homers. Rodriguez hit one to start the streak.

at County Stadium, Milwaukee Braves’ right-hander Jim Wilson beats future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts when he no-hits the Phillies, 2-0. The one hour and forty-three minute contest is the only no-no this season, is the first for the “Milwaukee” franchise since the team relocated from Boston following the 1952 season.
