On October 10 , 1980 – At the Astrodome – Joe Morgan slams a Tug McGraw fastball high off the right-field fence in the 11th inning for a triple and comes out for Landestoy. McGraw will intentionally walk the next two batters Jose Cruz and Art Howe. Bill Virdon was hoping for the and pinch-hit with Denny Walling. Walling down 0-2 felt he still had control because as he said, “I kept it real simple I seen how he pitched to our other left-handers, Craig Reynolds and Terry Puhl and assumed he would pitch me the same way.”
Denny Walling delivers Rafael Landestoy with a sacrifice fly as Houston wins their first post-season home game, 1-0, over Philadelphia. The Astros lead the best-of-five N.L.C.S., 2-1.
Joe Niekro blanks the Phils for ten innings before Dave Smith and pitches a scoreless 11th to get the win. This game was the longest NLCS game to go scoreless since 1969. Morgan the oldest Astro asked if his performance is comparing to Willie Stargell the previous year, Stargell the 39th-year-old Pirate lead his team to the title. Morgan said they don’t call me Pop’s because I can still run faster than most of my teammates. He would also say Stargell is a special person.
