On January 31 1980 — The Houston Astros sign free agent second baseman Joe Morgan. Houston was the first major league team the two-time National League MVP played with before he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds and became a force in the Big Red Machine.

Morgan, fulfilling his promise to the organization that gave him his start, Morgan is an important cog helping the team to its first division title. He hit .247 with 11 home runs, but had a great .367 OBP. The Astros will lose a hard fought NLCS to the dodgers 3-2.

Morgan will be off to San Francisco in 1981.
