In front of a sellout crowd at Tiger Stadium, Mark Fidrych makes his triumphant return to a big league pitcher’s mound after more than a year.

He goes 8 innings and gives up 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits against the Boston Red Sox in a 5-4 loss.

“I understand now,” Tiger manager Sparky Anderson said after the game. “I wasn’t here in 1976 to see him pitch, but I know now what they’re talking about with this young man. He’s just the opposite of what he appears. He’s all business. I just hope some of the other guys on our staff were watching. I hope what he showed rubs off.”

The 1976 American League Rookie of the Year will go 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA in what will be his final attempt to come back from injury‚ and his last major league season.

2016 – In a bizarre incident, White Sox ace Chris Sale is scratched from a scheduled start against the Tigers because of what General Manager Rick Hahn describes as a “clubhouse incident”. Sale apparently was upset at this team’s decision to wear throwback uniforms from the late 1970s, including their infamous dark blue long-collared jerseys, and in a fit of sartorial criticism, destroyed the uniforms with a pair of scissors. Matt Albers makes an emergency start wearing the Sox’s 1980s white jerseys. Sale’s tantrum will result in a five-day suspension handed by the ChiSox and he will be traded for a package of prospects after the season.

9/1/2007 – Toronto had two different lineups, one posted in the clubhouse and one handed to the umpires. The latter, which is the one that counts, showed Aaron Hill batting sixth, Lyle Overbay batting seventh, Gregg Zaun eighth and John McDonald ninth. Overbay batted in Hill’s spot in the second inning and made an out. Then Hill doubled but the Mariners pointed out the mistake. Here is where is got interesting. The umpires huddled and then called Hill out for batting out of order. Then Zaun was allowed to bat. The correct call would be that the proper batter (Zaun) should have been declared out and then the hitter after him (McDonald) would be the next batter. Thus, in this case, Hill should have been skipped entirely. The concept of skipping someone in the lineup is difficult for people to grasp but is the correct sequence here.

Frank White becomes the fourth player in the team’s 11-year history to hit for the cycle when he triples in the ninth inning of the Royals’ 4-0 victory over California at Anaheim Stadium. The Kansas City second baseman joins Freddie Patek (1971), John Mayberry (1977), and George Brett (1979), who also have completed the rare feat playing for the franchise.
