Philadelphia Phillies get purchases the club for just over $30 million, the highest price paid to date for a major league club

 

 

On October 29, 1981 – After being owned by the Carpenter family for almost 40 years (1943-1981), the Philadelphia Phillies are sold to a group headed by Phils Vice President Bill Giles for a record $32.5 million. Originally bought by Bob Carpenter Sr. in 1943 for $400,000, the team’s estimated worth is now over $1 billion.
