The Red Sox loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the 20th on singles by Rick Miller and Jerry Remy and a walk to Dwight Evans but Beattie came in and got Jim Rice to hit into a game-ending forceout.

The Red Sox who rallied for three runs with two out in the ninth inning managed just eight hits over the next 10 innings and were forced to settle for a 7-7 19-Inning suspended game Thursday night the longest contest in the 69-year history of Fenway Park The game was called because an American League rule states that no inning can begin after 1am The previous longest game in Fenway Park was on Sept 5 1927 when the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 12-11 in 18 innings.

Trailing 7-4 Boston tied the score in the ninth on a two out two-run single by Joe Rudi and a single by Rich Gedman The Manners opened the scoring in the second when Richie Zisk walked moved to third on a single by Jeff Burroughs and scored on a throwing error by first baseman Tony Perez.

Seattle added two runs in the third on an RBI double by Bruce Bochte who later scored on a wild pitch by starter Mike Torrez The Red Sox scored two runs in the third on a bases-loaded single by Jim Rice and tied the score 3-3 in the fourth when Dave Stapleton scored on a grounder Seattle made it 6-3 in a three-run fifth Julio Cruz doubled and scored -on a double by Tom Paciorek Dan Meyer single in Paciorek and Burroughs led in Paciorek Seattle made it 7-3 in the seventh on a double by Bochte and a single by Paciorek. Rudi pulled Boston within 7-4 in the eighth with an RBI single
