The Detroit Tigers trade OF Steve Kemp to the Chicago White Sox for OF Chet Lemon.

On November 27, 1981 — The Detroit Tigers trade OF Steve Kemp to the Chicago White Sox for OF Chet Lemon.

Although the trade was not popular Lemon will be a key contributor to the Tigers for 9 seasons and there 1984 World Championship.

Kemp will have his last productive year in 1982 and used in very limited duty and be out of baseball in 1986.

The Pirates bang 6 homers, their most since 2007, as they defeat the Reds, 8 – 3, to ensure they will host Cincinnati in the National League Wild Card Game in two days. Neil Walker hits two of the homers, and Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Marlon Byrd all also homer off loser Bronson Arroyo; Andrew Lambo completes the feast with his first major league long ball, off Logan Ondrusek.

In the other interleague doubleheader, the Orioles win two from the Pirates, 5 – 1 and 6 -5, with Matt Wieters hitting a 10th-inning walk-off homer in the nitecap; 3B Manny Machado makes his return to the field in the second game after missing the first month of the season. Finally, the Rays defeat Boston twice in Fenway Park, 2 – 1 and 6 – 5, as Red Sox pitchers issue 18 walks in the two games.

In a pregame ceremony before a nationally televised game with Boston, the Yankees celebrate the 50th anniversary of Roger Maris’s record-breaking 61st home run. The festivities include New York captain Derek Jeter carrying to home plate the bat that the Rajah used to hit the Tracy Stallard pitch on October 1, 1961, and Sal Durante, the 19 year-old fan who caught the historic homer in the right field stands, bringing the ball onto the field.
