On March 5, 1982 — Needing just three wins to reach 300 for his career, pitcher Gaylord Perry signs a one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners.
Perry has compiled a lifetime 297-239 record in 19 major-league seasons. Three more victories would make him the 15th pitcher in major-league history to win 300 games. “I didn’t just come here for three wins,” Perry said. “I think I can make a bigger contribution than that.” Perry had an 8-9 record and 3.93 earned-run average in 23 games with Atlanta last season. But he became a victim of a Braves youth movement at the end of last season. “They said they had what they needed,” Perry said. “I don’t think they do. Anyway, it’s their problem now, not mine.”
