On June 30, 1986, the New York Yankees acquire journeyman outfielder Claudell Washington and infielder Paul Zuvella from the Atlanta Braves for outfielder-first baseman Ken Griffey. The Yankees become Washington’s sixth team-after the Braves, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, and Oakland A’s.
1986 – Houston regains first place in a 2-1 nailbiter over Fernando Valenzuela and the Dodgers. Craig Shipley and Alex Trevino team up for the only Dodger run but they give it back in the seventh when a bad throw by Shipley puts Phil Garner aboard then a dropped third strike by Trevino puts Glenn Davis on base. Kevin Bass drives in Garner then Jose Cruz dribbles a 20-foot roller that Valenzuela must eat while the winning run scores.
Detroit beats Milwaukee, 9 – 5, in the first game of a doubleheader split, making Tigers manager Sparky Anderson the first manager ever to win 600 games in each league. The Brewers win game 2, 3 – 1.
On June 28, 1986, Phil Niekro of the Cleveland Indians and Don Sutton of the California Angels become the first 300-game winners to face each other during the 20th century. The Angels win the game, 9-3, but neither Sutton nor Niekro is involved in the decision.
On June 27, 1986, Robby Thompson of the San Francisco Giants sets a major league record when he is caught stealing four times. Cincinnati Reds catcher Bo Diaz nails the Giants’ rookie each time, but San Francisco still manages to win the game, 7-6, in 12 innings.
