On April 7, 1987 — Atlanta Braves pitcher Rick Mahler ties a National League record by throwing his third Opening Day shutout. Mahler beats the Philadelphia Phillies, 6 – 0, on three hits.

The Braves’ right-hander ties a National League record shared by Rip Sewell (Pirates, 1943, 1947, 1949) and Chris Short (Phillies – 1965, 1968 and 1970) for opening days shutouts.
