On ‘Dick Howser Day’ at Royals Stadium, the former manager, who died last month from brain cancer, is inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. The club honors their late former manager (1981-86), by retiring his uniform number 10, the first digits retired in the history of the franchise.
On July 3, 1987 Hitting just .212, Astros SS Dickie Thon bolts from the team. Thon has never fully recovered from a 1984 beaning that left him with blurred vision. An angry Astros General Manager Dick Wagner will put Thon on the disqualified list and he will not play for the rest of the year. Thon will become a free agent in November.
