1989 – It is 100 degrees in Texas and the Royals and Rangers are equally hot as seven batters get hit by pitches, the third time this century this has happened. The Royals put the game out of reach with a 3-run homer by Bo Jackson in the 7th to win, 13 – 2. When Mike Macfarlane is plunked in the 8th, the fifth Royal hit, he rushes the mound and tackles reliever Craig McMurtry.
1889 – Indianapolis gets a last-second reprieve in the 9th inning when the umpire calls time just before Con Daily apparently makes the last out of the game. Batting again, Daily singles home two runs to cap a 6-run rally to beat Boston, 8 – 7.
On September 1, 1989, Commissioner Bart Giamatti dies from a heart attack at the age of 51. Giamatti’s death occurs only eight days after he made headlines by banning Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose from baseball for gambling. Giamatti had been elected commissioner in 1988.
