1993 – The Kansas City Royals trade IF Gregg Jefferies and Ed Gerald to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for OF Felix Jose and IF/OF Craig Wilson.
1993 – Two free agents are signed: pitcher Scott Sanderson by the California Angels, and catcher Mike Scioscia by the San Diego Padres.
1993 – A trio of arbitration cases are avoided when three starters are inked to similar three-year deals. Infielders Craig Biggio and Ken Caminiti, along with outfielder Steve Finley now represent a $32 million dollar investment to go with the $36 million spent on deals for pitchers Doug Drabek and Greg Swindell – a pay-out unlikely to have happened before the recent change in ownership.
1983 – The Toronto Blue Jays acquire minor league first baseman Cecil Fielder from the Kansas City Royals for journeyman outfielder Leon Roberts. Although the Blue Jays won’t see the benefits, Fielder will become one of the American League’s top power hitters after a stint in the Japanese Central League, leading the AL in home runs in 1990 and 1991 with the Detroit Tigers.
Marge Schott is suspended for one year and fined $25,000 by a committee of her major league peers for bringing “disrepute and embarrassment” to the national pastime. The 64 year-old will also be required to attend and complete multi-cultural sensitivity training programs due to the numerous racial and ethnic remarks she is alleged to have made as the owner of the Reds.
